ANTARES
AHMEDABAD, 2024
The design of this single-floor apartment in Ahmedabad fundamentally revolves around the clients' aspirations for an independent, bungalow-like feel, but with limited security concerns enabling them to socialise in a more relaxed way. This idea is incorporated into the overall planning of the main public spaces, formal and informal living areas, dining and the public passage. These spaces overlook an extensive balcony, which gives the impression of larger proportions. The flexibility aspect is further reflected in the detailing of certain furniture pieces, accommodating multiple functions.
The design approach had to start by addressing the structural elements of the space and carving out each space around these masses. It is a home for three generations, hence each space is individually crafted to suit their personality and functionality. A consistent material palette is thus laid out to give a base layer to the entire design language across the residence.
Upon entering the home, one is greeted by a wooden main door camouflaged with the walls around with a veneer cladding. With a hand-carved wooden handle and a hidden biometric lock, the main door undoubtedly stands out. The public living spaces have been divided into formal and informal living areas through a series of sliding glass doors that get hidden in the pockets created for them. The entire living space can thus open up as a single big space.
Each space has been further detailed out specifically to its user and their interests. For the Grandmother's bedroom, vintage charm is introduced by using cane-clad shutters for the wardrobe, brass-inlaid wooden headboard and statement vintage wallpaper adorned with classic brass reading lights.
